Abstract: 
In this paper, we suggest a method to detect the walking step and estimate step length based on four different holding styles of the smartphone by using a set of inertial sensors included in the device. We suggest a simple but effective method to estimate holding styles of the device while the user walks, and based on that, we can count the walking step accurately. Moreover, a step length estimation method is suggested based on the frequency of the walking behavior. Through many experiments, the performance of the proposed method will be verified.
